SIX QUESTIONS
TO WORK THROUGH.
A clear plan starts with how the space needs to work and what the property can support. Bring rough answers, photos and examples to the first conversation.
1. What do you want to do outside?
Is this a shaded place to sit, a covered space for meals, room for a larger group or a better connection between the house and yard? The intended use helps you decide how much room and cover would be useful.
2. Where would it go?
Look at the path from the house, existing patios or decks, doors, trees and the usable yard. Take a few photos from different angles and make a rough note of the available space.
3. Do you need shade or weather cover?
A patio cover can be attached to the house or freestanding. Think about how much shelter you need from sun and rain, how the roofline should relate to the home and where water will drain.
4. Will it attach to the house?
Note whether you picture an attached patio cover, a freestanding cover, a deck or an elevated deck. Existing walls, rooflines, foundations, height and drainage can affect what needs review.
5. What is already on the property?
Existing paving, a deck, slopes, utilities, access for materials and where water goes after rain are worth mentioning early. You do not need to diagnose the site yourself; photos and a description provide a starting point.
6. What do you know about timing and budget?
Share any target season or budget range. A sketch and inspiration photos can start a conversation, while an estimate may require more detailed scope, property review and design decisions.
